Overview

At Zcash, we’re deploying next-generation technology at the intersection of privacy and financial systems. We have made great progress in maintaining and enhancing the Zcash software and the Zcash cryptocurrency has an excellent reputation for security and privacy. As we continue our commitment to the security of Zcash, we need to further our commitment to the Zcash Company global image and defending our trademark.

This is a contract, part-time position; we expect the work to range from 15-20 hours per week, with room for growth.

As our first Paralegal, your initial task will be to manage our trademark filings. You’ll be responsible for filing and re-filing our trademarks globally while working alongside external IP counsel. It’s important you act as the primary point of contact for our trademark licensing agreement. You’ll be in charge of choosing and engaging with a monitoring service that notifies us of potential trademark infringement, tracking anything from community chat, social media, independent websites and beyond. In addition to managing a service, you’ll also be responsible for being proactive about searching for trademark infringements as well as handling these issues as they arise. You’ll also need to review our trademark, copyright, and privacy policy and update them as necessary. Additionally, you’ll review occasional requests & provide guidance on use of the Zcash trademark.

In addition to trademark responsibilities, you’ll help us to bring in-house routine to legal tasks presently being serviced by outside counsel. These duties can range from creating employee agreements, helping to craft third-party contracts, reviewing internal documentation, as well as reviewing important external communication and announcements. You’ll also be responsible for assisting with the creation and operation of a legal entity to support international operations.

We believe this is a unique opportunity for the right individual. There’s a lot of potential for someone to get exposure in a new and exciting industry. While no experience in the cryptocurrency space is required or expected, the right candidate should be curious about this rapidly changing space and expanding their knowledge base. We’re not reinventing the wheel everyday, just some days. With that, there is potential for this role to grow into a thought leadership position, interacting with regulators and policy makers to bolster understanding of how Zcash fits into the broader ecosystem.

We’re flexible, but we have a few concrete requirements. We’re looking for someone with at least 3 years experience with Intellectual Property law. It’s important this person can work independently and has a quick response time to important incidents. Overall experience is key, this may have been gained in the form of a practicing attorney, a paralegal certificate, Associates Degree in paralegal studies, a Bachelor’s Degree with extensive classes in law, or years working at a law firm in some related capacity.

Why take this job? Why not join some other startup? Here are a few reasons:

  • Zcash is on a mission to give everyone on Earth an open, secure, and inclusive financial system through the power of exotic math.
  • We have solid funding. As precarious as the crypto markets may be, the company has a multi-year runway and we are working to diversify income streams.
  • We believe in self-care. Our CTO just got back from parental leave, and we move meetings for colleagues’ personal obligations. Your life comes first.
  • Flexible work arrangements–live where you want, but there is an office in Denver and some time in the office is preferred.
  • Everything we do is open source.

Some explicit non-requirements are:

  • Any particular credentials, educational or title-related.
  • Knowledge of cryptocurrencies in particular. We will happily teach you.

We have a strong ethos of professional conduct. We’re looking for people who can work in the professional environment we want our company to be. This means you need the empathy and emotional intelligence to be a supportive colleague and collaborate well with people of widely different backgrounds, personalities, and skill sets.
